TWSN: How Did Highly Ranked UDFA's Actually Do?
Over at TWSN I looked over how well the consensus big board actually predicted the ability of UDFAs to make the 53-man roster.
The Vikings and Eagles hauled in the two best UDFA classes, per the Consensus Big Board. Does that actually mean anything? I went over the 2023 Consensus Big Board’s top UDFAs to see if success in signing UDFAs translated into actual roster spots. Link below.
How Did Highly Ranked UDFA’s Actually Do?
Sean Tucker, Running Back, Tampa Bay Buccaneers (Consensus Rank: 148)
A talented running back from Syracuse, Sean Tucker likely would have been drafted in the fourth or fifth round if it wasn’t for a heart condition that he – and NFL teams – learned about during the NFL Combine medical testing process.
The heart condition was serious enough that he was pulled from Combine testing and immediately sought treatment, spending his pre-draft workout time with monitors hooked up to his chest or inside scanning machines monitoring the progress of his condition.
Had he been able to run, he could have challenged De’Von Achane and Jahmur Gibbs for the fastest running back time at the NFL Combine. That speed showed up after the Buccaneers signed him and Tucker generated the longest run the Bucs saw that preseason.
That kind of quickness at 210 pounds is rare and though he has work to do as a pass protector and receiver, Tucker made the team and may have an immediate role despite being the fourth running back on the depth chart.
